California

Medical and retail

There are three statewide licensing authorities for California: the Bureau of Cannabis Control (retailers, distributors, microbusinesses, laboratories, and events), the Department of Food & Agriculture (cultivation), and the Department of Public Health (manufacturing). These three authorities license both medical and retail businesses.

Click here to search for licensed retailers, distributors, microbusinesses, laboratories, or events. It is not possible to search all license categories at once by business name or individual. Lists of active licensees in each category are provided in PDF and Excel format and include business name and DBA information. The names of associated individuals are not provided. In addition, there is a list of expired, cancelled, and revoked licenses at the bottom of the page. These lists appear to be updated at least monthly, possibly on Friday each week.

Click here to search for licensed cultivators. It is not possible to search by business name or individual. At this time, all licenses are temporary. To search this database, select “Temporary Cannabis Cultivation License” under “License Type,” and set “Start Date” to the year 2000. Under “Additional Criteria,” narrow your search to the county in which the licensed cultivator is located. The names of associated individuals are not provided.

Click here to search for licensed manufacturers. This is only a list of active temporary licenses; all such licenses are due to expire at the end of January 2019. The list is sorted by business name; the names of associated individuals are not provided.

Massachusetts

Medical

The Department of Public Health currently regulates registered medical marijuana businesses in Massachusetts. Oversight of medical businesses is gradually being transitioned to the Cannabis Control Commission, which also has responsibility for retail businesses. There is no searchable database of licensed RMDs or associated individuals on the DPH website.

A list of the current status of all licensed RMDs and applicants is available here. It is updated at least monthly.

You can review the public elements of all RMD applications (sorted by name) here.

Click here to search for licensed RMDs by location.

Retail

Retail cannabis businesses are regulated by the Cannabis Control Commission. There is no searchable database of licensed cannabis businesses on the CCC website at this time, although this is a tool that the Commission appears to be working on developing as of September 2018.

Licensing decisions can be viewed here. Filter the documents by “Marijuana Establishment License Applications.” The “Executive Summary” for a given applicant will also list the names of associated individuals whose backgrounds were reviewed by the CCC.
